The process of cooling hot air creates a lot of moisture and condensation. If we do a bad job of removing the moisture and condensation or something becomes plugged due to poor maintenance, the coil above your furnace can become a breeding ground for bacteria and fungi. According to a recent TIME Magazine interview with Dr. Mark Mandell, an epidemiologist with the California Department of Public Health, air conditioner systems have been linked to “nasal congestion, breathing problems, headaches, fatigue and irritated skin.” Of course this does not mean you should in any way have to sacrifice the quality of your health to enjoy the benefits of air conditioning, but there are a few things we need to do to ensure that our AC system does not affect our indoor air quality.

Your first step in preventing mould, bacteria and fungi from growing in your air conditioner is to have the system regularly cleaned and serviced by one of our qualified professionals. Next we may consider having a high efficiency filter and filter rack installed on your system, we recommend MERV 11 filters or higher in most cases. Finally but most importantly I suggest having an Ultraviolet Light air purification system installed to kill organisms in your system before they can affect your indoor air quality.
